Graduate Recruitment in Ireland Booming Post-Covid

Graduate recruitment in Ireland booming post-pandemic

According to the latest figures drawn from the Central Statistics Office of Ireland, most sectors of the Irish economy have grown over the past year and unemployment in the country is at just 4.5%, the lowest since 2005.

The unemployment rate for 15-24 year-olds came down to 11% in 2022 from 21.1% in 2021. Brendan Baker, head of the career development centre at Maynooth University, said of the news: “There are lots of jobs for graduates, and we have never been as busy with advertising graduate programmes.”

“After Covid, companies are keen to get back out there and meet graduates, and they want to come to campus. They are competing for graduates, and our office is letting graduates know about the jobs out there and how to work through the application processes.”

The Association of Higher Education Career Services conducted a graduate employers survey in 2022 that the University of Limerick compiled. It surveyed a total of 345 local, national and global MNCs, not-for-profit organisations, and small to medium-sized enterprises across a range of industries.

The survey results found that the demand for engineering graduates was 48%, while 30% of the companies surveyed were looking for business graduates. 25% of them were seeking ICT and electronics graduates, while 16% wanted to hire science graduates, 9% wanted education graduates and humanities graduates, 7% were seeking law graduates, 6% wanted to hire creative graduates, and another 6% wanted health science graduates. 11% of the companies were looking to hire graduates from any discipline.
