New legislation is likely to give university status to the 235 year old Dublin College for Surgeons in Ireland, a move which will be helpful in attracting more international students and researchers to the country. The College was found under the Royal Charter in 1784 has more than 3500 students and trainees. The recently built medical education centre in York Street offers medicine and health sciences students at RCSI the most advanced facilities in all of Europe.
RCSI has been lobbying the government of Ireland for obtaining university status as it is a public statutory, regulated institution and that its statutory status is same as Trinity College Dublin. RCSI is in the top 2% of higher education institutions worldwide according to the latest global rankings. Currently there are seven public universities in Ireland. Recently in January 2019, Ireland’s first technological university, TU Dublin, was established after merging three top technical institutes.
