University of St Andrews ranks 1st in 2023 Guardian University Guide league table

Published

The University of St Andrews has beaten both the University of Oxford and University of Cambridge to first place in the Guardian University Guide 2023.

It is the first time that the leading Scottish university has finished top of the Guardian Guide. It had previously finished 1st in the Times Good University Guide 2022 and marks the second time in two years that St Andrews has finished ahead of their Oxbridge rivals.

Professor Dame Sally Mapstone, Principal and Vice-Chancellor, said: “I hope that St Andrews’ terrific students and all of my hard-working colleagues will feel the recognition of this very significant achievement. They entirely deserve it.

“The amalgam of our strengths in the key areas which The Guardian measures has set us narrowly ahead of some of the very best universities in the world.”

Seven St Andrews’ subjects also ranked top in the UK: Art History, Neuroscience, Chemistry, Economics, English, History, and International Relations.
